2017 $50 125th Anniversary of the Stanley Cup Pure Silver Coin from RCM

The Royal Canadian Mint released the 2017 $50 125th Anniversary of the Stanley Cup Pure Silver Coin, a replica of the Stanley Cup trophy. The Stanley Cup is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the sixth Governor General of Canada. Lord Stanley purchased the trophy for 10 Guineas, to be presented to “the championship hockey club of the Dominion of Canada. The original trophy was 7.5″ tall, 11.5″ in diameter, and, simply, a cup. The first team to win The Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) in 1893, and for many years only amateur teams competed for the Cup. Teams with the professional National Hockey Association started to compete for it in 1910, and by 1926, the Stanley Cup had “become the trophy of the National Hockey League.”

The reverse design presents a reduced-scale replica of the Stanley Cup, all in a magnificent reverse proof finish. Detailed design reflects the ringed appearance of the Cup’s rounded barrel base, topped by the silver bowl that replicates the one donated by Lord Stanley. The coin design developed by the Royal Canadian Mint’s team of R&D specialists, engineers and engravers. The obverse is flat, and shows the dates “1892-2017”, the words “THE STANLEY CUP LA COUPE STANLEY”, the face value “50 DOLLARS”, and Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
