The Perth Mint released Planet of the Apes 50th anniversary 2oz Antiqued Silver Coin to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the release of the blockbuster movie – the Planet of the Apes. Each coin is minted from 2oz of 99.99% pure silver with an antique finish and issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu. Each coin weighs 62.2 grams, 40.60mm. in diameter and a thickness of 4.58mm.

Planet of the Apes released in 1968 and was one of America’s greatest science fiction movies, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner. The movie tells the story of an astronaut crew whose ship is traveling into the future (year 3978) but they are not aging. After crashing into a lake in the middle of a mountainous desert, the crew discovers a society in which apes are the dominant species and humans are mute creatures wearing animal skins. The film was released on February 8, 1968, in the US and it was a huge commercial success, earning a lifetime gross of $32.6 million.

The reverse of the coin features a detailed design of three of the main characters Dr. Zira, Dr. Zaius and a hunt leader behind, and a depiction of the desert-like Ape City. The coin also bears the inscription: “50 YEARS OF THE PLANET OF THE APES” – and the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. The obverse depicts Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, along with “QUEEN ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen, “2 DOLLARS” – the face value, “TUVALU” – the issuing country, “2018” – the issue year and “2oz 9999 Ag” – the weight of the coin and the fineness of the Silver. The 2018 Planet of the Apes 50th anniversary Silver Coin has a limited mintage of only 2,000 worldwide and each coin presented in a clear acrylic case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
