Morgan silver dollars are one of the most popular and desired American coins amongst collectors. The Morgan dollars were minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921.The coin is named after it’s designer, George T. Morgan, the “Special Engraver” for the director of the Philadelphia Mint who was brought from England for this project. Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia teacher was the model for his illustration of Miss Liberty. Initially, the coin was created to benefit the silver mining companies when Congress passed the Bland-Allison Act that effectively dictated the number of coins produced each month.

The first Morgan Dollars were struck on March 11, 1878. A left-facing portrait head of Liberty is featured on the coin’s obverse and graced the back with an eagle with wings outstretched. More than 500 million Morgan Dollars were minted until production stopped in 1904, after the statuary 25-year run for a coin design. in 1921 after the passage of the Pittman Act in 1918, the Morgan dollar was reintroduced and minted in Denver Mint, Almost 270 million coins are melted and replaced by the Peace Dollar by the end of 1921. The Morgan silver dollar contain 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper and having 96 known date and mint varieties. Following the Silver Act of 1942, 53 million Morgan and Peace dollars were melted again.

The mint marks appearing on the Morgan silver dollar coins are none, representing Philadelphia, “S” for San Francisco, “CC” for Carson City, “O” for New Orleans and “D” for Denver. Carson City ended production in 1893, which makes the Carson City morgens rare and highly collectible today. The rarest of the Morgan dollars is the 1895 mint, 12,880 mints struck that year, only 880 survived. The 1895 Morgans are known as the “king of the Morgans.”.
