2017 Ellis Island 5oz Silver Coin

The fourth coin in the United States Mint series “America the Beautiful Quarters®” is released featuring Ellis Island. Five different coins appear annually in this program and this is the thirty-ninth of fifty-six coins from the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. The Other releases are Effigy Mounds National Monument of Iowa, Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in the District of Columbia, and Ozark National Scenic Riverways of Missouri.

Ellis Island was the most active immigration station in the United States with operations running from 1892 to 1954. Ellis Island National Monument of New Jersey was named after Samuel Ellis, who owned the island before it became an immigration headquarters. In 1965 Ellis Island was added to the Statue of Liberty National Monument by Presidential Proclamation and is administered by the National Park Service.

The obverse of the Ellis Island coin features a portrait of George Washington created by John Flanagan which has appeared on quarter dollars since 1932. Surrounding the design are inscriptions reading “ELLIS ISLAND,” “NEW JERSEY,” “2017,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The reverse design depicts an immigrant family approaching Ellis Island. The hospital building can be seen in the background. The reverse design created by Barbara Fox and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. This Ellis Island Five Ounce Silver coin composed of .999 fine silver and have a diameter of three inches. This coin having a limited mintage of 25,000 worldwide.
