2017 Vatican City “Fatima Apparitions“ Centennial Commemorative €2 Coin

In October 2017 The Vatican City is issuing a commemorative €2 coin to mark the 100th anniversary of the event noted as the Fatima apparitions. On 13th May 1917, the Sunday before Ascension Day, Lúcia Santos and her cousins Francesco and Giacinta, claimed that Mother Mary appeared before them. The children were playing in the village square when suddenly, they saw some lightings. After a while, they saw another lightning and above a little tree a woman dressed in white, brighter than the Sun. There have been other six visions after the first appearance, between May 13 and Oct. 13, 1917.

The Fatima apparitions €2 coin weighs 8.5 grams and measures 25.75 millimeters. A total of 105,000 coins are being released for public. The ringed-bimetallic coin has a copper-nickel core and copper-aluminum-nickel ring. All “the Fatima apparitions €2 coins” are legal tender throughout the eurozone. The obverse design portrays the three young shepherds to whom Mary appeared, with the background the Sanctuary of Fatima. At the left side of the coin inscribed with the mintmark ‘R’ and at the bottom the name of the designer ‘O.ROSSI’. At the top is the inscription ‘CITTÀ DEL VATICANO’ in a semi-circle and right under is the year ‘1917’. Underneath the year, from left to right, is the inscription ‘FATIMA 2017’. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
