The Royal Canadian mint released its 3rd and final coin of the Little Creatures Series – 2018 $20 Little Creatures: Monarch Caterpillar – Pure Silver Coin. The 2018 Monarch Caterpillar proof silver coin is the 10th coin to feature Murano glass which is handcrafted by master glassmakers Bernardino and Giorgio Vio, in Murano, Italy. Each coin is unique as every Murano glass monarch caterpillar has been individually blown by master glassmakers. The Royal Canadian Mint is the only mint to feature Murano glass on its coins. The other coins in the Little Creatures series were snail & beetle.
Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are one of the most beautiful butterflies and belongs to the Nymphalidae family. The life cycle of a monarch butterfly are- the egg, the larvae (caterpillar), the pupa (chrysalis), and the adult butterfly. The eggs are laid on milkweed plants and in about four days the eggs hatch into baby caterpillars. In 9 to 15 days the caterpillar will be fully-grown and find a place to attach itself to move to the chrysalis stage, also called pupa. In about 8 to 15 days the adult Monarch butterfly finally arises from the pupa.
The 2018 Monarch Caterpillar 1 oz. of 99.99% pure silver coin’s reverse co-designed by Canadian artist Maurice Gervais & by Italian master glass makers Bernardino and Giorgio Vio. Maurice Gervais designed the milkweed plant with its long leaves, and its clusters of pink flowers. The Italian glass makers handcrafted the monarch caterpillar and its poised on the leaf of a swamp. The yellow, black and white stripes of the monarch larva is beautifully reproduced on the reserve. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II by the great Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. The legend ELIZABETH II D. G. also featured. This proof finish coin weighs 31.39 grams of silver and having a diameter of 38 mm. The coin is a Canadian legal tender with a face value of $20 and having a limited mintage of just 5,000 coins worldwide. This Final coin of Little Creatures Series is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint branded Maroon clamshell with black beauty box.
