The Perth Mint released their first-ever gold proof of the “Deadly & Dangerous Coin Series” featuring RedBack Spider, one of Australia’s deadly spiders. The 2018 Red-Back Spider 1 Troy Ounce Pure Gold Proof coin is an official legal tender of Niue. The Redback spider gold coin measures 40mm in diameter, weighs 31.1 grams (1 ounce) and crafted from 99.99% pure gold. This $100 Red-Back Spider 1 Troy Ounce Pure Gold Proof has already sold out at the Mint on pre-release as it had an ultra-low mintage of 150 coins worldwide.

Australia is infamous for its deadly snakes, spiders and sea creatures. Redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti) is knows as Australia’s “Black Widow Spider” a highly venomous spider species belongs to the family Theridiidae. The redback spider is related to the black widow and looks similar, only difference is the dorsal red stripe on its back. Only female redback spiders have venomous bites, female redback spiders are about 1 centimeter long, and have slender legs about twice that length. Males are quite a bit smaller, about 3-4 mm long, with legs about twice their size. Redback Spiders are found throughout Australia and they live in a range of habitats from forest to desert.

The reverse of the coin features a full color realistic image of a Redback Spider in its web. On the left of the reverse, the inscription: “RED-BACK SPIDER” – the name of the coin also can be found. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley and the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen, “NIUE” – the issuing country, “100 DOLLARS” – the face value, “2018” – the year of issue and “1OZ 9999 GOLD” – the weight of the coin and the fineness of the Gold. The coin is encapsulated inside a lacquered wood clamshell-style presentation case, lined with black velvet and white satin, and protected by a gold and black outer box. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is also included with the pack.
