The New Zealand Mint has released an officially licensed 40th anniversary coin to celebrate one of the best arcade games “The Space Invaders”. The arcade game Space Invaders launched in June 1978 by the Japanese electronic game manufacturer Taito Corporation. “The Space Invaders” created by Tomohiro Nishikado, it is one of the earliest video games released and considered one of the most successful games of all time. Space Invaders is one of the earliest shooting games and the aim is to to earn as many points as possible by defeating waves of aliens with a laser cannon and prevent them from “invading”.

The obverse of the Space Invaders 40th Anniversary 1oz Silver Coin Features space invaders logo, with colorized aliens from the game created using lenticular printing, allowing for the aliens to move as the coin is rotated and viewed from different angles, just like the actual game. Along the edge of the bottom of the coin, on a Proof background it reads 1 oz 999 FINE SILVER and ©TAITO CORP. 1978, 2018. The reverse of this 2 dollar Proof coin displays the year 2018, country name, monetary denomination and the image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. This 1oz fine silver coin is presented in a specially designed box which replicates the original arcade game cabinet with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. The mintage limited to only 3,000 coins worldwide.
